3.5 hr workshop

Location drawing is an integral part of her practice as an artist. During this 3.5hr workshop, local artist Emma Carlisle will share her sketchbooks with you. Experiment and play with materials, explore warm up drawing exercises and then guide you through a sustained 1hr drawing session to end the day. Having completed her masters in Children's Book Illustration at Cambridge with full distinction in 2014, Emma went on to publish a series of successful children's books, securing nominations a number of national awards including the Macmillan Book Prize in 2015.

The full workshop will take place in and around Tre Pol and Pen, please bring warm clothing and materials you may want to experiment with.

As part of this workshop you’ll also receive 
1 x A5 Royal Talens sketchbook 
2 x Royal Talens Ecoline watercolour pens 
2 x colouring pencils

Breakdown of the day

14.30 - 15.30 

Introduction to location drawing - why its important for your practice, I’ll show you my sketchbooks from the last year.

Experiment with materials provided as well as any you’ve brought along.
How different materials layer up and the importance of using different mark making.

Choose your pallet - looking at complimentary colours for the surrounding area.

15.30 - 16.00

Our café has beautiful views from its floor to ceiling windows, we’ll start doing warm up exercises from here, as jumping straight into location drawing can be really daunting.
Quick drawings - 30 seconds, 2mins, 5mins, 15mins.

16.00 - 16.30

Taking what you’ve learnt during the warm up exercises apply this to a more sustained 30min drawing from courtyard.
16.30 - 17.30

15mins to wander around and pick a good spot to draw.
45mins drawing on location around the grounds.
This will be your choice if you want to work on a more sustained drawing or try more quick sketches.

17.30 - 18.00

Back into the cafe to warm up with a cup of tea and review the work done during the workshops. A chance to share your sketchbook work with others in the group as well as seeing what everyone else has been up to.
